If you’re even a percent like me, then you’re probably waking up every morning saying —
Yeah! Today I’m going to do great work. I’m going to do work that’s going to be amazing. It’s going to change the world.
This exact mindset is the thing that’s holding you back from actually doing that great work and everything you want to do.
When I was in design school, my friends used to stay up all night long making homework and getting into a creative block. They didn’t have any idea about what to do for tomorrow and then ended up working up all night. I was finishing up work at eight ten, watch TV and sleep early. The reason that I didn’t have any good idea was because I was just waiting for that idea to just pop into my mind out of thin air.
Everybody can have bad ideas, everybody can have shitty ideas. Our clients can have bad ideas, our parents can have bad ideas. Everybody has got a bad idea, we’ve got tons of bad ideas but because we are our own worst critics, we are actually censoring those ideas in our head instead of taking them out.
So when we say we don’t have any idea, what we mean is that we killed off all our ideas, by making an assumption that it was bad. Now we don’t know what to do. What I find out that is, I just do those bad ideas. I put them out in the world and then I show the work to somebody. Then he tells me — “What is this? This work sucks because…
